The SeaWeb Seafood Summit Invites Global Community to Partake in Upcoming Conference

Return of the Summit refocuses industry attention on seafood sustainability

New Orleans, LA (October 7, 2014) – Diversified Communications and SeaWeb announced that global representatives from the seafood industry, conservation community, academia, government and the media can now register to attend their  co-produced conference, the SeaWeb Seafood Summit. The Seafood Summit will be held 9-11 February 2015 in New Orleans, LA, United States and provides a forum for industry leaders to facilitate education and action on today’s most pressing seafood sustainability issues.

Aimed at advancing solutions to seafood sustainability by integrating science, policy and market forces, the conference will feature a program based around interactive workshops, panel discussions, and keynote presentations on critical seafood topics, including:

  • The global importance of aquaculture in meeting protein needs around the world;
  • Traceability and its impact on seafood value chains;
  • Fishery and aquaculture improvement projects (FIPs & AIPs);
  • Preventing human rights abuses in seafood supply chains;
  • Economic and ecosystem resilience and the role of the seafood industry; and
  • Global sustainable fishing challenges and successes.

“It is truly exciting to be a part of an event that unites the industry’s top influencers and leaders to develop an action plan on how to resolve these challenges head on,” says Mary Larkin, Group Vice President of Seafood Expositions for Diversified Communications. “We’re determined to create positive global impact through solutions-based discussions and collaborations.”

“For the past 10 years, in locations including Hong Kong, Paris, and Vancouver, opinion leaders from around the world have said that the Summit is one of the most effective ways to engage and strengthen the sustainable seafood movement,” says Dawn M. Martin, President of SeaWeb. “New Orleans is an optimal location for this year’s event because it serves as a prime example of the importance of building both economic and ecological resilience as a means to overcome numerous challenges.”

The full conference program is complemented by a Pre-Conference Workshop on traceability, which will address issues like Illegal, Unregulated and Unreported (IUU) fishing; a topic deemed top priority by the Obama Administration during the State Department’s Our Ocean conference. Additionally, the Summit has begun organizing a series of experiential field trips, to provide attendees with an opportunity to develop a first-hand look at how local fisheries are able to effectively operate in the most economical and sustainable ways. Field trips will be held before and after the Summit on 8 February and 12 February.
