Carlos Montero joined the Marine Stewardship Council in 2011 as the Fisheries Manager for Spain and Portugal. He currently operates as the Accessibility Manager within the Standards and Science team of the MSC. The aim of Montero's work is to analyse, understand and develop solutions to overcome the challenges of fisheries around the world in accessing the certification program. Montero develops solutions for issues regarding the scale of certain fisheries, the quality and quantity of available data, specific geographical regions of the developing world and particular species and fisheries with bioecological challenges. Through his role at MSC, Montero is able to interact with a large variety of stakeholders from fishing operators to researchers, managers and NGOs.
Prior to MSC, Montero's work has been mainly focused on fisheries development projects in Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean region, both on artisanal/small scale and industrial fisheries, and from different perspectives such as research, control and monitoring, capacity building, etc., working in academic institutions, international development agencies, national administrations, NGO’s and private companies.
