Plenary: Sustainable Seafood at 20: Looking Back at the Road Ahead
A powerful idea was born in the mid-1990s: that meaningful stewardship of seafood resources could – and, in fact must – result from collaboration between conservation organizations and the seafood industry. Over the last 20 years, that idea became a movement that now brings industry and NGO leaders together around widely-recognized sustainability standards, shared commitments to constant improvement, and innovative partnerships to develop new and better conservation practices.
But what has really changed? What has the movement accomplished, where has it fallen short, and where have past gains revealed new challenges? And given its progress to date, where should the movement focus next? Informed by conversations over six months with leaders in industry and nonprofits, this panel conversation explores these critical questions, using the sustainable seafood movement’s first 20 years, as a guide to informing the direction of its next 20.
