Innovation in Action: the Journey towards Incorporating Novel Feed Ingredients and Engaging Consumers
At the 2018 SeaWeb Seafood Summit, an exciting panel was featured – “Shaping a Sustainable Future for Aquaculture Feeds”. It addressed the fact that Aquaculture is now the fastest growing food system today and a key part of a secure food future. With this growth, we will need new feed ingredients to augment the static supply of fish oil and fish meal that is fed to farmed seafood. Specifically, we will need new sources of long-chain omega-3s and protein that are scalable and sustainable.
For the 2019 SeaWeb Seafood Summit, we will take the next step to share the journey of Thai Union to act on this challenge to incorporate innovative feed ingredients in their shrimp feed in the Southeast Asia Region. The panel will include representatives from Thai Union and two new alternative ingredient providers, as well as a representative from the newly established Sustainable Shrimp Partnership (based in Ecuador).
As several leading companies in the aquaculture industry work to bring innovation to feed, how do we communicate this to consumers? With responsibly sourcing and health top of mind for seafood consumers, the panel will discuss strategies they are using to tell the story of innovation to consumers.
