Maria Åberg

PANEL: Delivering Fisheries Improvement Projects in Asia: Engaging the Asian Fishery Supply Chains Towards Sustainability

Maria Åberg works in the Marketing and Innovation Department at Abba Seafood AB, a Swedish seafood producers that also imports canned tuna from Thailand. She is responsible for Food Legislation and involved in food safety and product development. She also established a joint Fishery Improvement Project with Sustainable Fisheries Partnership and Abba´s suppliers of canned tuna in Thailand to ensure future sustainable fisheries of tonggol (Thunnus tonggol) by robust management. The project is partially funded by Sida, the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency.
Ms. Åberg has a PhD in Food Science from the Swedish Agricultural University.

Pornchat Achakulwisut

Managing Director, Crystal Frozen Foods
PANEL: Harnessing the Power of Shrimp Aquaculture Improvement Projects in Asia

Pornchat Achakulwisut has been involved in the shrimp and seafood processing industry for 25 years and serves as the Managing Director of Crystal Frozen Foods, a seafood processing plant in Thailand. During the course of his career, Mr. Achakulwisut has witnessed firsthand the impacts of uncontrolled fishing on raw material supplies for his factories. He has sought to form partnerships that support sustainability improvements of the supply chains on which CFF depends. Mr. Achakulwisut believes that this work is critical for the long-term benefits of supply chain stakeholders. CFF is currently involved in a shrimp aquaculture improvement project in Thailand.

Melanie Agopian

Senior Director, Sustainability, Loblaw Companies Ltd.
PANEL: Leveraging Consumer Awareness and Demand for Sustainable Seafood

Melanie Agopian is Senior Director, Sustainability with Loblaw Companies Limited. Ms. Agopian supports the private label business in the development and implementation of Food for the Future, the long-term strategic sustainability vision for Loblaw’s brands. Among her broader sustainability efforts, Ms. Agopian works with the sustainable seafood team to implement the Loblaw Sustainable Seafood Commitment. This commitment requires all seafood sold in Loblaw stores to come from sustainable sources by the end of 2013 and covers all wild and farmed seafood products, in all categories, across all brands.
Ms. Agopian has a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Toronto with a Minor in Environmental Economics.

David Anderson

Head, Fisheries Section, Oregon State Police
PANEL: Combatting Illegal Salmon Fisheries in the 21st century: Emerging Tools, Technologies and Partnerships

Lieutenant David Anderson is the head of the Fisheries Section of Oregon State Police, managing both sport and commercial fisheries enforcement. He began enforcing regulations related to sport, commercial, and Treaty Indian fisheries on the Columbia River. He next served in OSP’s Special Investigations Unit for fish and wildlife cases. He is a member of the Enforcement Consultants advisory group to the Pacific Fisheries Management Council. Lieutenant Anderson currently serves as the chair of the Columbia Basin Law Enforcement Council, consisting of law enforcement representatives from the states of Oregon and Washington, Columbia River Treaty Tribes, and the federal government.

James Anderson

Leader of Global Program on Fisheries & Aquaculture, World Bank
PANEL: Sustainable Seafood: What Fisheries and Aquaculture Can Learn from Each Other

James Anderson is the World Bank’s leader of the Global Program on Fisheries and Aquaculture (PROFISH). Previously, he chaired the Department of Environmental & Natural Resource Economics at the University of Rhode Island. Mr. Anderson’s publications relating to fisheries and aquaculture management, seafood markets and international trade include The International Seafood Trade (2003) and The Great Salmon Run: Competition between Wild and Farmed Salmon (2007). He was editor of Marine Resource Economics from 1999 through 2011 and has served on three National Science Foundation/NRC committees related to aquaculture.
Mr. Anderson earned his Ph.D. in resource economics from the University of California, Davis.

Jimmy Andino

Jimmy Andino is the Chief of Party for the Spiny Lobster Initiative (SLI) in Honduras, focusing on conservation, good management, and social change within the lobster fishery. Prior to the SLI, Mr. Andino worked for three years as the Director of GUARUMA, a Honduran NGO working in the environmental education of youth in the rural communities of Cangrejal River Watershed, Pico Bonito National Park.
Mr. Andino holds a biology degree from Autonomous University of Honduras and a masters degree in Management and Biology Conservation from Centro Agronómico Tropical de Investigación y Enseñanza, Costa Rica.

Alejandro Anganuzzi

Executive Secretary, Indian Ocean Tuna Commission
PANEL: MSC Certification of Tuna Fisheries

Alejandro Anganuzzi is the Executive Secretary of the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC) and a biologist specializing in mathematical modelling of ecological systems, particularly those affected by fisheries. Previously, Mr. Anganuzzi conducted research with the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission, and served as Director of the Indo-Pacific Tuna Management and Development Programme of the United Nations. He has also served as a scientific advisor for a number of private and public institutions, including governments, universities, national research institutions, NGOs and private sector companies.
Mr. Anganuzzi holds a degree in biology, and completed post-graduate studies at the University of Washington.

Dessy Anggraeni

Research Director, Sustainable Fisheries Partnership

Currently, Ms. Anggraeni works for Sustainable Fisheries Partnership as manager of the South East Asia Fisheries Improvement Partnership (FIP), where she leads the implementation of FIPs in the South East Asia region. She is also responsible for developing SFP projects in the region. Before joining the Partnership, Ms. Angraeni worked with Conservation International Indonesia as Senior Resource Economist.
Ms. Anggraeni holds a master’s degree in Applied Environmental Economics from the Department of Agricultural Economics and Business Management, Imperial College at Wye, University of London and a bachelor’s in Forest Resource Conservation from the Faculty of Forestry, Bogor Agricultural University, Indonesia.

Jennifer Barker is the Acting Director of the Global FISH Alliance (G-FISH), funded by the U.S. government and implemented by the nonprofit organization, FHI 360. She promotes sustainable fisheries by working with the entire value chain to build solutions balancing the needs of people and natural resources. Ms. Barker has extensive experience working in international development programs in education, health, and the environment managing programs worth $20 million. She has also worked in the U.S. Congress and Credit Suisse First Boston in New York. Ms. Barker has a Masters in Public Administration from George Washington University.

Doug Beveridge

Doug Beveridge joined Sustainable Fisheries Partnership after a decade at the UK National Federation of Fishermen’s Organizations. Previously, Mr. Beveridge was at the Marine Laboratory in Aberdeen, Scotland, Fisheries Resources Section. He has been involved in the reform of the EU Common Fisheries Policy, developing the interface between the fisheries science community and industry via science partnerships, working with European Regional Advisory Councils and representing European fishers within science and environmental forums. Mr. Beveridge leads SFP’s division on fisheries and aquaculture improvement as well as global programs like ocean acidification and seafood sector work.
Mr. Beveridge studied at Hull International Fisheries Institute.

Malcolm Beveridge

Malcolm Beveridge is Director of Aquaculture and Genetics at WorldFish in Lusaka, Zambia. His research interests include aquaculture and fisheries and their impacts on the environment, poverty, and hunger. Previously, Mr. Beveridge was Director of the FRS Freshwater Laboratory, Scotland. He was also an academic staff member at the Institute of Aquaculture, University of Stirling, where he was appointed Reader in Aquaculture and the Environment in 2000. Mr. Beveridge was awarded an FAO Andre Mayer Research Fellowship at the University of the Philippines for work on environmental impacts of cage aquaculture.
Mr. Beveridge has a PhD in Ecology from the University of Glasgow.

Lucy Blow

Lucy Blow works with New England Seafood International, an importer and processor of premium sustainable fish supplying Marks and Spencer, Sainsbury’s, and Waitrose. She has developed relationships with stakeholders including Marine Stewardship Council, WWF, Sustainable Fisheries Partnership, Marine Conservation Society, Seafood Choices Alliance, Greenpeace and Fairtrade, as well as fisheries ministers. Ms. Blow has helped to break down barriers in a highly competitive industry, recognizing that fisheries improvement is non-competitive and can be achieved collaboratively. Ms. Blow is also involved with eco labelling, IUU, Fishery Improvement Projects, capacity building for fishermen, bycatch data and mitigation, data deficiency, tuna fisheries and CFP reform.

Richard Boot

Prior to founding Fishchoice in 2008, Richard Boot worked as Director of Operations for FishWise (Sustainable Fishery Advocates). At FishWise he developed training and implementation programs for use in grocery stores’ meat and seafood departments.
Mr. Boot has worked with fishermen and fishing associations in Morro Bay, California to help bring their seafood products to the retail marketplace and continues to keep relationships with aquaculture operators to help market their products for US consumers.
Mr. Boot graduated from the University of California at Santa Barbara with a degree in Business Economics. He also managed large restaurants for Chart House Inc. and Landry’s.

Nadia Bouffard

Nadia Bouffard is Director General of Fisheries and Aboriginal Policy in the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada. Her responsibilities include the modernization and renewal of fisheries management governance, policies and tools to help transition the fisheries sector to be competitive and environmentally sustainable in stewardship with partners and stakeholders across Canada. Ms. Bouffard holds a law degree from the University of Ottawa. Ms. Bouffard has represented Canada in many international meetings, including the United Nations, the Food and Agriculture Organisation, as well as international fisheries commissions such as NAFO and ICCAT. She also headed Canadian delegations on bilateral meetings with Greenland.

Mariah Boyle

WORKSHOP: IUU Fishing Action Plan: How the Industry can Catalyze Current Efforts to Combat Illegal Fishing

Mariah Boyle is a Project Director at FishWise, a non-profit sustainable seafood consultancy in California that provides innovative market-based tools to the seafood industry. She works with North American retailers to help them create sustainable seafood purchasing policies and improve the environmental responsibility of their seafood inventory. Ms. Boyle also has worked on seafood traceability, publishing two white papers on seafood traceability in 2012. She has also conducted field studies in Sierra Leone to quantify artisanal fisheries in order to inform community-based management of local fisheries.
Ms. Boyle has a Masters in Marine Science from Moss Landing Marine Laboratories.

Maurice Brownjohn

Maurice Brownjohn is the Commercial Advisor to the Parties of the Nauru Agreement (PNA) Office, and is also the PNA Commercial Director of PACIFICAL CV As a naturalized citizen of PNG since 1989, Mr. Brownjohn has acted as Chair of the PNG Fishing Industry Association and worked with a leading domestic tuna longline tuna fleet operator in PNG.
Mr. Brownjohn has co-founded and served on several fisheries related organizations, and continues as a active member of the Board of the National Fisheries Authority of PNG and Director of the National Fisheries College, Kavieng.
Mr. Brownjohn also holds an Honours degree in fisheries science.

Henk Brus

Henk Brus is Managing Director of PACIFICAL CV, the global tuna trading company owned by the 8 PNA Pacific Island Nations with exclusive marketing rights to the MSC certified skipjack tuna fisheries in their EEZs. In 1998 he founded the ATUNA company and started the blog atuna.com, which has become the worlds leading internet portal on tuna. He also delivered an important speech in 2007 named “Sustainable Marketing: Necessity or Naïveté?” Mr. Brus also founded SUSTUNABLE to explicitly market and promote FAD free tuna to EU food retailers. In 2010 the PNA countries invited Sustunable to become their J/V partner in Pacifical.

Richard Buchanan

Richard Buchanan is the President and CEO of AgriMarine Holdings Inc. He previously served as President of Agrodev Canada Inc., a subsidiary of Envirocon Pacific Ltd. primarily responsible for international agriculture and fishery developments. Mr. Buchanan was also employed as a design engineer in water supply and pumping systems for pulp and paper mills at H.A. Simons Engineering. He has been on the Board of Directors at Kyuquot First Nation Corporation since 1998, and is presently Treasurer of the Vancouver Aquarium Conservation Foundation.
Mr. Buchanan obtained his Bachelors of Science in Engineering (Civil) from McMaster University.

Annie Castaldo

PRESENTATION: The Potential Disappearance of Oyster Production in Europe and Beyond

Annie Castaldo is a lifelong shellfish farmer, working for her family business growing oysters and mussels in the Etang de Thau, South of France. She served as President of the Initiative Center for Agriculture and Rural Milieu Promotion. She continues to work hard to preserve the environment and promote the Thau lagoon products. Ms. Castaldo also sought recognition for fish farmers’ wives status in the French legislation, with successful resolution in 2006. Today, Ms. Castaldo is a member of the AKTEA network (European organizations concerning women in fishing and aquaculture sectors) and a regional representative of the Traditional Mediterranean Oyster Farmers.

Brian Caouette

Director, Sustainable Fisheries & Markets, Wild Salmon Center
PANEL: Combatting Illegal Salmon Fisheries in the 21st century: Emerging Tools, Technologies and Partnerships

Brian Caouette is Director of the Sustainable Fisheries and Markets Program for the Wild Salmon Center, an international organization dedicated to the conservation and sustainable use of wild Pacific salmon ecosystems. Previous employment includes Pacific Environment and the Monterey Bay Aquarium, as well as Muraviovka Park for Sustainable Land Use in Russia and Animal Refuge Kansai in Japan. Mr. Cauoette was awarded a David L Boren Graduate Fellow in 2002 and a US State Department Diplomacy Fellowship.
Mr. Cauoette received his MA in International Environmental Policy from the Monterey Institute of International Studies and a BA from Boston University.

Udo Censkowsky

Udo Censkowsky is co-founder and director of Organic Services GmbH, an international consulting company specializing in organic and sustainable food. Mr. Censkowsky also organizes the Bio-Fish Forum to promote organic seafood and offers training courses for interested companies on organic and sustainable seafood. He is a member of the EU expert group discussing organic aquaculture in the European Union. In 2009 he published the first global organic aquaculture report. Mr. Censkowsky previously worked for Naturland – an organic farmer and certification organization and as scientific adviser for a member of the German Parliament.
Mr. Censkowsky has a degree in agriculture engineering.

Felix Chan

Researcher, The University of Hong Kong
PRESENTATION: Seafood Profile of Asia’s ‘World City’: Hong Kong as a Role Model for Sustainable Trade and Consumption Patterns?

Felix Chan researches the global impact of fisheries products trade in Hong Kong. His research identifies the characteristics of Asian seafood market in terms of consumer preferences, species composition, and diversity. Mr. Chan currently works for an international non-profit organization on environmental standards. He gives seminars and trainings for businesses on implementation of sustainable procurement policies and is responsible for business engagement programmes to create a positive impact on the ground.
Mr. Chan has an MSc in Environmental Management from the University of Hong Kong. His dissertation research focused on studying the self-sufficiency and certification options of seafood in Hong Kong.

C.W. Cheung

Head of the Footprint Programme, WWF Hong Kong
PANEL: Servicing the Sustainable Seafood Information Needs of New Markets

C.W. Cheung joined WWF Hong Kong in 2010 as the Head of Footprint Programme. At WWF, Mr. Cheung is responsible for all footprint-related programmes with focus in sustainable sourcing and consumption, including sustainable seafood, sharks, bluefin tuna, sustainable timber and paper, and producing the Hong Kong Ecological Footprint Report. He develops and implements public and corporate engagement programmes involving a range of supply chain stakeholders. Mr. Cheung is also one of the judging panel for HICAP – Sustainable Hotel Awards. He is a former senior executive with many international companies in Hong Kong.
Mr. Cheung earned an MBA from the City University of Hong Kong.

George Chiu

Mr. Chiu is the President of Luen Thai Fishing Venture, Ltd. an integrated fishing business that provides base operations, logistics, processing services, and marketing of tuna and seafood products. He is also the Executive Vice President of sister company Tan Holdings Corporation, a diverse holding company with business in more than a dozen industries in the Western Pacific. Mr. Chiu’s primary role as President and Executive Vice President is to oversee all of the Luen Thai Fishing Venture, Ltd. and Tan Holdings companies in Guam and Micronesia.
Mr. Chiu graduated from the University of Guam with degrees in Accounting and Management and is a Certified Public Accountant.

Clarus Chu

PANEL: Where the Sustainable Seafood Journey Has Brought Us To? Retailers’ Experience on Supporting a Sustainable Seafood Market

Clarus Chu joined WWF UK in 2009 as the Seafood Policy Officer. He works with the supply chain in the UK market to promote sustainable seafood. Prior to moving to the UK, Mr. Chu worked in WWF Hong Kong on marine conservation issues including fisheries, coastal projects development, sustainable seafood and trade in threatened marine species. In 2007, he led the release of the WWF sustainable seafood consumer guide in Hong Kong, the first ever in the East Asia. Mr. Chu has a Masters degree from the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK.

Anthony Ciconte

Senior Executive, Southern Shark Industry Alliance
WORKSHOP: The Role of Developing Sustainable Fisheries for Sharks in Addressing Global Declines in Shark Populations

Anthony Ciconte has been a seafood sales and marketing strategist for over 20 years. Working to promote credentialed supply chains in Southern Rock Lobster and Shark, Anthony is the Senior Executive of “Redlegs” Clean Green Southern Rock Lobster, and the Southern Shark Industry Alliance (SSIA). He has also worked as a consultant for government agencies such as the Fisheries Research Development Corporation, Australian Fisheries Management Authority and Department of Primary Industries in Victoria. Currently, Mr. Ciconte is the lead investigator for a project exploring alternatives for shark fisheries to transition to more eco-friendly, socially accepted methods under the Southern Australian Shark Fishery.

Hugo Contreras

Hugo Contreras is currently the Managing Director for Cargill’s aquaculture business in China and is responsible for the global strategy for Cargill’s entire aqua business. Mr. Contreras has been with Cargill for 9 years in various capacities including General Management, Sales and Marketing, Mergers and Acquisitions, and Strategy and Business Development. He has lived and worked in North and Central America, Europe, SE Asia and China.
Mr. Contreras has a degree in Chemical Engineering from Tecnologico de Monterrey and a MBA from The Darden School of Business at the University of Virginia.

Sarah Cooley

Research Associate, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution
PANEL: Handprints on the Water: How the Seafood Industry and the Conservation Community Can Confront Ocean Acidification

Sarah Cooley’s research uses oceanographic and social science data to forecast the consequences of human-driven changes in the marine inorganic carbon cycle. Anthropogenic changes such as ocean acidification will affect not only the marine environment but also the benefits, like economic revenue and protein supply, that marine ecosystems provide to human communities. Recently, she has assessed how ocean acidification could alter protein supply and business revenue using ocean models and fisheries datasets. Dr. Cooley’s research increasingly incorporates ecology, sociology, economics, resource management, risk assessment, and decision making under uncertainty. Dr. Cooley received her PhD from the University of Georgia in 2006.

Andy Cornish

PANEL: Lessons from China: Low Ecological Footprint Seafood

Dr. Andy Cornish is the co-author of the field guide “Reef Fishes of Hong Kong”. He has previously coordinated coral reef conservation efforts for the government of American Samoa, and taught fisheries and mariculture at the University of Hong Kong before becoming Director of Conservation for WWF Hong Kong in 2005.
Dr. Cornish has been closely involved in WWF-Hong Kong’s Seafood Consumer Choice Initiative. He also has a keen interest in sharks, plays a coordination role within the WWF network in the Asia-Pacific region to conserve sharks, and has published several papers on the reproduction, diet and toxic loading of bamboo sharks.

Cheryl Dahle

A journalist and entrepreneur who has worked at the intersection of business and social transformation for more than a decade, Cheryl Dahle conceived and co-led the effort to found Future of Fish. As a consultant, she has served leading organizations in the space of hybrid business/social solutions, including Humanity United, Nike, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the David and Lucile Packard Foundation and the Center for the Advancement of Social Entrepreneurship at Duke University. Ms. Dahle spent 15 years reporting on social entrepreneurship and business for publications including Fast Company, The New York Times and CIO magazine.

Ned Daly

PRE-SUMMIT WORKSHOP: Future of Seafood Ecolabelling and Certification

Ned Daly is the Senior Projects Advisor with SeaWeb’s Seafood Choices program, supporting corporate sustainable seafood initiatives in the North American marketplace and working to find global solutions to threats facing ocean ecosystems, communities dependent on those resources, and the industries they support.
Prior to joining SeaWeb, Mr. Daly was Director of RugMark International, a certification program for child-labor-free rugs produced in Southeast Asia. He was also Chief Operating Officer for the Forest Stewardship Council in the United States. Chitra Devi Gopalakrishnan is with the Peninsular Malaysia Seas programme, working towards implementing sustainable fisheries management in Malaysia. Her work involves a lot of liaison with government departments, private sectors and local communities to implement projects and activities related to sustainable fisheries management and marine protected areas, and more recently with the Save Our Seafood campaign. Ms.Gopalakrishnan joined WWF-Malaysia in June 2006, to oversee the exit from the Langkawi Blue Archipelago Project in the northern state of Peninsular Malaysia. She was previously with the Malaysian Nature Society, working on environmental management and land-use planning for more than 4 years.
Ms. Gopalakrishnan graduated from the National University of Malaysia with a Marine Science degree and is currently pursuing her Masters in Fisheries Management at the  University of Putra Malaysia.

Mark Dia

Mark Dia started his career fighting illegal logging with a small NGO, leading education and training, working in protected area management and training marine park rangers and community leaders in identifying coral, seagrass and fish. For the past twelve years he has worked for Greenpeace in various countries in Asia from India to Japan, and has worked in various capacities from logistics, research, as a campaign director, country manager, project leader and now as head of the regional oceans campaign of Greenpeace Southeast Asia.
Mr. Dia has a degree in Social Psychology, and a Master’s in Archaeology and Environmental Science.

Christian Decugis

As the grandson of a professional small-trades fisherman, Christian Decugis has fished professionally since 1980. He helped create the Cap Roux protected fishing zone. Along with other Prud’homme-fishermen, he meets with representatives from Mediterranean nations concerning fisheries management and the Common Fisheries Policy. As a member of the Local Fisheries Committee, Mr. Decugis works on the issues of training and safety. He is President of the Var Region Local Fisheries Committee and Vice-President of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur Regional Fisheries Committee. Mr. Decugis is also one founding member of “MEDARNET”, a Mediterranean artisanal fishermen platform.

Jean-Charles Diener

Jean-Charles Diener has worked on tilapia farming in Africa and Black Tiger shrimp in the Philippines with CIRAD. Recognising an opportunity to better connect producers and customers, Mr. Diener founded OFCO in 2007. Acting as a specialised intermediary and consultancy business, OFCO’s core service embraces pre-shipment inspections, loading supervision, pangasius by-product trading and advice.
Mr. Diener has a Master’s Degree in Agronomy specializing in Aquaculture obtained in France.

Sainsbury’s is the UK’s largest retailer of MSC-certified seafood currently selling over 80 lines for more than £64m.  There are plans for a significant expansion where certified supplies also meet Sainsbury’s strict quality standards.

At CEA, he focuses on strategic planning for nonprofits and foundations, particularly in the marine conservation and climate arenas. He has led a wide array of related projects over the last decade, including studies on the state of global fisheries as well as reviews of the sustainable seafood movement. Mr. Elliott has a Bachelor’s from Harvard and a Master’s from Oxford.

WORKSHOP: Concerted Management of a Maritime Area

The new Priority Axis 4 of the European Fisheries Fund (EFF) provides support for the sustainable development of fisheries areas. In particular, it supports measures to promote economic diversification and an improved quality of life in areas affected by a decline in fishing activities.
Twenty-one Member States will implement this new priority Axis and it is expected that at least 250 groups (FLAGs) will be created across the EU. These groups will also be encouraged to learn from each other through inter-regional and transnational cooperation.
The FARNET Support Unit was established by the European Commission to assist in the implementation of EU measures for the sustainable development of fisheries areas (Axis 4 of the European Fisheries Fund). The Support Unit will assist local partnerships in developing new, innovative solutions and in sharing their ideas and experiences with other areas and with policy makers.

Isabel Ferreira is the Lead Implementer for the Pemba Bay Initiative in Northern Mozambique, an initiative under the Global FISH Alliance. Ms. Ferreira and her team work with local communities and Wildlife Conservation Society to improve awareness and develop a fisheries management plan for Pemba Bay. She has experience in the tourism sector and consulting for the private sector. She also served as a consultant for the World Bank on sustainable tourism and managed three eco-lodges in the Nampula and Cabo Delgado Provinces of Mozambique.
Ms. Ferreira holds a Bachelor’s degree in Tourism Business Management from Escola Superior de Hotelaria e Turismo, Estoril, Portugal.

Laurent Galloux is the Head of Bureau Veritas Seafood Division. Before joining Bureau Veritas, he acted as a consultant specialised in Quality and Certification systems for the seafood sector in West Africa (Senegal-Mauritania). Mr. Galloux also worked as an Expert Scientist for several standardisation processes, including CNRS (microbiology of seafood products), AFNOR, ISO, OFIMER, and EU commission for fishing ecolabel working group. He sits in the global steering committee of the Shrimp Aquaculture Dialogue initiated by the WWF to create future ASC standards.

François Gerlotto

Dr. François Gerlotto is a fisheries ecologist specializing in pelagic fish behavior and schooling. He uses underwater acoustics for direct observation of pelagic ecosystems and has coordinated several EU projects in this field. He was chair of the ICES Working Group for Fisheries Acoustics Science and Technology, chair of the ICES Fisheries Technology Committee and the ICES Study Group on fish avoidance to research vessels. Dr. Gerlotto worked for 17 years with South American and Caribbean countries as director of a partner’s fisheries department. He has published more than 60 papers in indexed journals. Dr. Gerlotto is Doctor Honoris Causa of the University Pedro Ruiz Gallo, Peru.

Ms. Gershenson team has developed a new and innovative way to monitor the legality of commercial salmon fisheries via satellite imagery and GIS technology.

Mr. Gilman earned a PhD from the University of Tasmania School of Geography and Environmental Studies, a MSc from Oregon State University Department of Oceanography, and a BA from Wesleyan University.

Ernesto Godelman

Ernesto Godelman is an engineer from Argentina and for almost two decades has been involved in the sustainability of Latin American fisheries, with the goal of improving the quality of life for local communities. His postgraduate studies include Fisheries Management and Onboard Scientific Monitoring. Recently, he lectured about the ecological risk assessment on the effects of fishing methods in Latin America. Mr. Godelman founded CeDePesca (Centro Desarrollo y Pesca Sustentable), an NGO which has achieved an important presence in Latin America. Mr. Godelman is member of the board of the World Ocean Network, which is coordinated in Latin America by CeDePesca.

Benoit Guerin

Born in 1980 in the heart of Lyon, Benoit Guerin dreamed sea throughout his youth. After completing studies in agronomy, he specialized in fisheries science and is hired to WWF France in 2004. It focuses on two French fisheries: small trades on the Mediterranean coast and Nephrops trawlers in the Bay of Biscay and demonstrates the feasibility of the implementation of co-management within the Common Fisheries Policy. This proposal will be supported by the fishing sector and NGOs through national conferences (Grenelle). In 2007 he was appointed to run and develop the South RAC. Covering European waters of the South Atlantic and attended by over 100 organizations (fishing and civil society), the South RAC vocation to advise the European Commission and the States and be a source of ideas for sustainable fishing. He has been driving force in a proposed management plan for the Franco-Spanish anchovy fishery. He is also involved in several scientific projects – professional proposal management plans including one on the Great Mudflat.

He served in the US Navy Reserve as a commissioned officer and has experience at sea on a variety of merchant and fishing vessels.

Bill Holden is the Pacific Fisheries Manager for the Marine Stewardship Council , a global fisheries certification and ecolabel programme. He also skippered various company vessels, including snapper and tuna longliners. Mr. Holden was the President of the Fishing Industry Association of Tonga and also a director of the Pacific Islands Tuna Industry Association.

Paul Holthus

Susan Jackson

Susan Jackson is President of the International Sustainable Seafood Foundation (ISSF), a global partnership among scientists, tuna processors and non-profits to undertake science-based initiatives for the long-term conservation and sustainable use of tuna stocks, reducing bycatch and promoting a healthy marine ecosystem. Prior to joining ISSF, Ms. Jackson was the Vice President for government/industry relations and seafood sourcing for Del Monte Foods. She joined the H.J. Heinz Company in 1997 as an attorney in the Law Department, later working with the company’s seafood sourcing division.
Ms. Jackson graduated from The University of Notre Dame with a BS in Economics and has a law degree from Duke University.

Meghan Jeans is the Director of Fisheries and Aquaculture Programs at the New England Aquarium, where she oversees the sustainable seafood program and fisheries management and policy. Most recently, Ms. Jeans served as the Program Director of the Fisheries Leadership & Sustainability Forum with Stanford, Duke and Environmental Defense Fund. Prior experience includes NOAA’s Office of General Counsel for Fisheries, the Marine Fish Conservation Network, and Ocean Conservancy. She also served on the Pacific Fishery Management Council’s Highly Migratory Species Advisory Subpanel, ICCAT, and other RFMO negotiations.
Ms. Jeans has law and Master’s degrees in environmental policy and an undergraduate degree in biology.

Dick Jones

Dick is a 23-year veteran of the seafood business, including 13 years in the supermarket sector with retailers such as HEB Grocery Company and Whole Foods Market. His varied experiences in all levels of the seafood industry have proven a solid asset for companies who are unsure of how to balance sustainability and business. He has served on the Board of Directors for the Aquaculture Certification Council, the California Salmon Council, and Alaska Quality Seafood.

Miguel Jorge

Miguel Jorge is the Director of the National Geographic Society’s Ocean Initiative, which strives to restore the ocean’s health and productivity. Previously, Mr. Jorge worked as Director of WWF-International’s Marine Program, where he oversaw global strategies on fisheries and seafood, shipping, and high seas conservation policy. Mr. Jorge has worked extensively in Latin America and the Caribbean on marine and freshwater large-scale conservation planning processes in the Gulf of California, Galapagos, and Mesoamerican Reef. He has also worked as an aquaculture specialist, refugee camp conflict mediator, and UN delegate.
Mr. Jorge has a Master’s in Marine Policy and a Bachelor’s in Aquatic Biology.

Jens Kahle

Dr. Jens Kahle’s studies focus on aquaculture. His research comprises the culture of: finfish in recirculating systems, bryozoa for medical research, crustacea, polychaetes, and micro and macro algea. Dr. Kahle has participated in research projects for sustainable aquaculture in marine and freshwater environments. At the University of Oldenburg (Germany) Dr. Kahle lectured on aquaculture before joining WAB Trading International GmbH to focus on organic aquaculture. Today his work is dedicated to the set up and preparation of small-holder production systems for shrimp and fish to undergo organic certification according to EC and accredited private organic standards.

Jennifer Dianto Kemmerly

Jennifer Dianto Kemmerly directs Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch program, engaging and empowering North American consumers and businesses to support environmentally responsible fisheries and aquaculture through purchasing decisions. Previously, Ms. Kemmerly served as Program Manager for the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership to promote fishery and aquaculture improvement projects and build relationships between the seafood sector and NGOs. She has also served as a Senior Conservation Associate for the New England Aquarium and worked for the American Oceans Campaign (Oceana) and Environmental Media Services.
Ms. Kemmerly obtained a MSc degree in Environmental Sciences from Johns Hopkins University and a BS in Education from Florida State University.

Lori Kennedy

Lori Kennedy has been the co-owner and CEO of Louisbourg Seafoods since 1984. Her work with community and industry has led to innovative corporate policies and procedures that govern how Louisbourg Seafoods operates within the Atlantic Canadian fishery. Ms. Kennedy and her team of researchers and fishers developed an internal data-tracking scheme that has become a cornerstone of traceability for the company. Ms. Kennedy and company personnel are also involved with the Nova Scotia Leatherback Sea Turtle working group.
A graduate of Cape Breton University’s Business Program with a major in Accounting, Kennedy recently completed the Women’s Leadership Forum through Harvard Business School.

Gerald Knecht

Gerald Knecht is the president and founder of North Atlantic, Inc where he develops and implements strategic vision and growth. Mr. Knecht began as a fleet operator of five large New England ground fish trawlers. Previous titles within the industry include President, New England Fisheries Development Foundation; Director, National Fisheries Institute; Director, Gulf of Maine Research Institute; Advisor, Food Marketing Institute Seafood Group; and Founder, Lesser Sunda Sustainable Fisheries Initiative. Recently, Mr. Knecht established a foreign joint venture with P.T. Kelola Mina Laut in Indonesia.
Mr. Knecht earned a BA from Bowdoin College in Political Science.

Brett Koonse

Brett Koonse has been working for thirty years in seafood and seafood safety. He began his career at the Texas Department of Health, collecting and analyzing aquatic samples for environmental contamination. Mr. Koonse then joined the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, holding positions including lead National Shellfish Processor Inspector, Chief of the Programs and Inspection Branch, and presently as an aquaculture food safety expert. Mr. Koonse led the development of Good Aquaculture Practices and has conducted a variety of aquaculture food safety activities in 40 countries.
Mr. Koonse graduated from the University of California Santa Cruz with a degree in Marine Biology.

Thomas Kraft

Thomas Kraft is the founder and operator of Norpac Fisheries Export based in Honolulu, Hawaii. Norpac Fisheries Export has been instrumental in the continued development of the long-line fishery in the Central and Western Pacific. In 2006 Norpac was recognized by the Hawaii State Senate as the Employer of the Year, for employer practices and outreach to the community. Norpac remains committed to the ongoing development and implementation of environmentally responsible fishing gear, practices, data gathering and management.
Mr. Kraft is a certified public accountant and holds a BA in Business Administration.

Jan Kranghand

Jan Kranghand is the Head of Quality Assurance of METRO Jinjiang Cash & Carry China and a member of the Management Board of Star Farm. He is responsible for quality, food safety, traceability, sustainability and supplier qualification and training along the whole supply chain. Mr. Kranghand is also Chairman of the Global Markets Capacity Building Program Working Group for the Global Food Safety Initiative. Previously, he was Director of International External Infrastructure at the Strategic Quality Management Department of METRO AG and Director of Quality Assurance and R&D with Struik Foods Europe.

Duncan Leadbitter

Duncan Leadbitter is the Technical Director for Sustainable Fisheries Partnership, an NGO that works with seafood businesses to assist their moves towards sustainable sourcing and management. As an in-house consultant, Mr. Leadbitter provides advice on a wide range of issues such as aquaculture feed fish fisheries, tunas and deep water species, as well as liaising with seafood producers, NGOs and multilateral fisheries organisations. He has spent 30 years in fisheries management and marine conservation planning, working for government, the commercial fishing industry, and NGOs.

Daniel Lee

Daniel Lee is an aquaculture specialist with particular expertise in the design, implementation and management of new projects. He has worked mainly on the farming and reproduction of crustaceans, most notably marine shrimp, covering numerous research and commercial projects in South America, the Caribbean, Africa, and Asia. He published the textbook Crustacean Farming, Ranching and Culture and works with the Global Aquaculture Alliance. He has assisted in the development of international codes of practice for responsible aquaculture, emphasizing food safety, traceability, environmental, and social issues. Mr. Lee also works as a Research Associate at Bangor University’s Centre for Applied Marine Sciences.

George Leonard

George Leonard is Director of Strategic Initiatives at Ocean Conservancy, where he leads efforts for sustainable fish farming, develops new initiatives to address ocean acidification, and provides science, policy, and strategic advice. Before joining Ocean Conservancy, Mr. Leonard developed a scientific framework to evaluate sustainable seafood at Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch program. In 2002, he helped launch COMPASS (the Communication Partnership for Science and the Sea), an innovative approach to communicating emerging marine conservation science to policymakers, NGOs and resource managers.
Mr. Leonard holds a PhD from Brown University and a MSc from Moss Landing Marine Laboratories in California.

Dmitry Lisitsyn

PRESENTATION: Combatting Illegal Salmon Fisheries in the 21st century: Emerging Tools, Technologies and Partnerships

Dmitry Lisitsyn is the Chairman of Sakhalin Environment Watch (SEW), a leading conservation organization in the Russian Federation. In 2011, Mr. Lisitsyn was awarded the prestigious Goldman Environmental Prize in recognition of his work to conserve the endangered ecosystems of Sakhalin Island. SEW fights the salmon poaching epidemic on Sakhalin by increasing enforcement efforts and establishing public watch dog groups to protect priority salmon rivers. SEW, with support from the Wild Salmon Center, was the driving force in creating the Vostochny Wildlife Refuge, a protected habitat area for healthy populations of pink, chum, and coho salmon, as well as char and other salmonids.

David Little

Professor of Aquatic Resources & Development, University of Stirling
PANEL: Innovation in Seafood Sustainability: Success Stories from Asia

Professor David Little of the Sustainable Aquaculture Group at the Institute of Aquaculture has experience in tropical aquaculture with a strong background in hatchery development. His interest in aquaculture research for development has embraced both technical initiatives and broader interdisciplinary programs. Dr. Little coordinates the EU-FP7 funded project Sustaining Ethical Aquaculture Trade that aims to enhance the sustainability of production and trade in Asian farmed seafood with Europe. He is editor of the Sustainability and Society section of the journal Aquaculture, a Board Director of the World Aquaculture Society and Aquaculture without Frontiers, and on the Standards Oversight Committee for the Global Aquaculture Alliance.

Esther Luiten

Esther Luiten is currently working as senior program manager of aquaculture at IDH Sustainable Trade Initiative. By convening public and private interests, IDH programs transform commodity markets towards sustainability and boost private sector development in producing countries, to deliver impact on Millennium Development Goals 1,7 and 8. Previously, Ms. Luiten worked as deputy director of the North Sea Foundation. Together with Christien Absil she was awarded with the Edgar Doncker Prize for Nature. Ms. Luiten has a scientific background in Environmental Innovation and Communication, with  her PhD thesis awarded the Professor R.J. Forbes Prize for integrating scientific and socio-economic research.

Hannah Macintyre

As Wild & Farmed Fish Sourcing Manager at Marks & Spencer, Hannah Macintyre is responsible for delivering the global sustainable procurement strategy across all species of fish and shellfish. Ms. Macintyre played a key role in the development and launch of Forever Fish at M&S, which partners with Marine Conservation Society, WWF, and the National Schools Partnership to protect the marine environment and educate future generations on the importance of making sustainable seafood choices. A Marine Biology graduate, Ms. Macintyre began her career with Marine Ecological Surveys Ltd, a marine consultancy company focused on the impacts of industrial and construction developments in the marine environment.

Andrew Mallison

Director General, International Fishmeal & Fishoil Organization

Andrew Mallison joined International Fishmeal & Fishoil Organization in 2011 as Director General. Previously he was a Director at the Marine Stewardship Council where he was responsible for standards and licensing, managing global seafood sourcing for British retailer Marks and Spencer and advising government ministers. Mr. Mallison has a degree in Fisheries Science from Plymouth University and has received national and international awards for seafood standards.

Nanette D. Malsol

Director, Bureau of Oceanic Fishery Management, Republic of Palau

Nannette Malsol is the current Director of the Bureau of Oceanic Fishery Management for the Republic of Palau. Ms. Malsol is also Chairperson to the Parties to the Nauru Agreement. Ms. Malsol serves as the Fisheries Official and Head of Delegation in negotiating bilateral and multilateral access agreements with distant water fishing nations, as well as participating in the implementing arrangements of the Parties to the Nauru Agreement, the Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency, and the Western & Central Pacific Fisheries Commission.
Ms. Malsol holds a Master’s Degree in International Fisheries Policy from the University of Wollongong, Australia.

Jesse Marsh

Jesse Marsh is the Manager of the Major Buyer Initiative for WWF. She works with major seafood buyers to encourage and assist them in using their purchasing power to secure seafood from environmentally sustainable sources, assess current seafood supply chains for sustainability, and use their supply chain to improve fisheries around the world. Ms. Marsh has nine years of marine conservation experience.
Ms. Marsh received a BA in Environmental Science from Boston University and a Master’s of Environmental Management from Duke University, where she studied the interaction of sea turtles with the blue crab fishery in North Carolina.

Howard McElderry

Howard McElderry is a marine biologist, a developer of at-sea monitoring technology, and an innovator in the field of sustainable marine resource management. Since co-founding Archipelago Marine Research Ltd in 1978, Mr. McElderry has played a key role in the development of at-sea and shore-based monitoring programs. Today, as VP and Director of Electronic Monitoring at Archipelago, Mr. McElderry works with all levels of government and industry to support sustainable seafood initiatives, develop fully documented fisheries, and help fisheries around the world to improve efficiency, control costs, and remain competitive.

Shannon McDiarmid

General Manager, Director of Safety & Sustainability, Royal Hawaiian Seafood

Shannon McDiarmid is the General Manager and Director of Safety and Sustainability at Royal Hawaiian Seafood. She has developed Royal Hawaiian’s sustainable sourcing commitment, initiated a sustainable seafood seminar series, and established the FISH (Fisheries Improvement and Sustainable Harvest) Fund in order to fund fishery improvements and education. Before joining Royal Hawaiian, Ms. McDiarmid worked for various environmental non-profits including the National Ocean Economics Program and the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch Program.
Ms. McDiarmid received an MA in International Environmental Policy and MBA in International Management from the Monterey Institute of International Studies.

Robins McIntosh

Robins McIntosh is involved in the development of shrimp aquaculture. Past projects include developing: macro brachium in the Amazon, shrimp aquaculture in Myanmar, feed and hatchery technology in Thailand, farm management technology and feed formulations in Guatemala, and the first zero water exchange commercial farm in Belize. Now with Charoen Pokphand Foods in Thailand, Mr. McIntosh assists with modernizing hatcheries, developing shrimp genetic programs, and ensuring environmental sustainability. He continues to further increase the efficiency of shrimp aqua culture where Charoen Pokphand Foods has business interests.
Mr. McIntosh has a MA from the University of South Florida, specializing in Marine Algae.

Steven Mackinson

Senior Scientist, CEFAS Laboratory

Dr. Steven Mackinson is a Senior Scientist at the CEFAS Laboratory in the UK. He began working with Canadian herring fishermen in the late 1990s to connect opportunities for research and management. Since then he has been interested in building stronger collaboration among scientists, stakeholders, and policy and has been coordinator of the ‘GAP’ projects (www.gap2.eu). Dr. Mackinson’s other areas of research have included acoustic studies on fish, the effects of renewable energy plans on fishermen, and using ecosystem models to investigate the impacts of management and environmental change on ecosystems and dependent fisheries.

Phil MacMullen

Phil MacMullen has worked in the fishing and seafood industries for 35 years. He has managed research and development programs relating to fish harvesting technology and the interactions between fisheries, the broader natural environment, management regimes, and the market. More recently, Mr. MacMullen has been encouraging dialogue between the various stakeholders that have an interest in the marine environment, looking for the factors driving their policy decisions and exploring supply chain solutions to sustainable or responsible sourcing. A key interest is in using industry-generated data to improve both marine environmental management and fishers’ access to market opportunities.

Jimmy Martinez

Jimmy Martinez is a biologist from the University of Guayaquil, with over 30 years of experience in the field of research and fisheries management. Mr. Martinez has worked as a fisheries researcher since 1980, for both, the public and private sectors. Since 2007 he has led the National Action Plan for the Conservation and Management of Sharks of Ecuador (PAT-Ec), as well as the National Action Plan for the conservation and management of mahi mahi in Ecuador (PAN – Dorado). Since May (2012) holds the position of Undersecretary of Fisheries in the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Aquaculture and Fisheries of Ecuador (MAGAP).

Matt Merrifield

Matt Merrifield is the GIS Manager for the California Chapter of The Nature Conservancy. As a geographer and technologist, Mr. Merrifield is interested in applying geospatial tools to the social-ecological systems that are a critical in achieving The Nature Conservancy’s mission.

Rhea Moss-Christian

Rhea Moss-Christian is currently Chief of Statistics, Compliance, and Technical Projects at the National Oceanic Resource Management Authority for the Federated States of Micronesia, where she is responsible for reviewing fishing activity in Micronesia’s Exclusive Economic Zone and developing policies to enforce national fishing regulations. Previously, Ms. Moss-Christian worked for NOAA as an International Fishery Policy Analyst. She also has experience working for the Republic of the Marshall Islands as the Deputy Secretary of Trade and Investment.
Ms. Moss-Christian has Master’s degrees in International Policy from Stanford University and Diplomatic Studies from the University of Oxford.

Geoffrey Muldoon

Geoffrey Muldoon began working for WWF as a consultant and then as a programmatic lead on regional fisheries conservation programs in six countries. In this role he has developed and managed a comprehensive multi-national program to address sustainability issues in coral reef fisheries, specifically the Live Reef Food Fish Trade. Dr. Muldoon is also responsible for establishing an Asia-Pacific platform to unite seafood producers and buyers using Fisheries Improvement Programs to leverage commitment  shifts by industry to meet higher sustainability standards.
Dr. Muldoon has a PhD in Fisheries Economics from James Cook University and Bachelor’s degree in Economics from University of Tasmania.

Francis Murray

Research Fellow, University of Stirling
PANEL: Innovation in Seafood Sustainability: Success Stories from Asia

Dr. Francis Murray, a member of Sustainable Aquaculture Group at the University of Stirling, is currently a co-ordinator of the EU-FP7 large-scale collaborative research project Sustaining Ethical Aquaculture Trade. This inter-disciplinary project evaluates and supports sustainable production of four major seafood commodity groups farmed in Asia that constitute a steadily increasing share of European consumption. His experience in aquaculture began with salmon production in Scotland and Ireland specializing in recirculating aquaculture systems. Dr. Murray also undertook developmental research and consultancy work on integrated aquaculture systems in Asia, working with CARE International in Sri Lanka and the World Fish Centre in Malaysia.

Gopinath Nagaraj

Gopinath Nagaraj is a former Director of Fisheries for Melaka and Negeri Sembilan and is currently Principal Consultant at Fanli Marine and Consultancy Sdn Bhd, a fisheries and aquatic consultancy firm. He has undertaken a wide range of studies on the fisheries and aquaculture industry of Malaysia focusing on Ecosystem Approcah Fisheries Management. Mr. Nagaraj is a registered Environmental Impact Assessment Consultant and Subject Consultant with the Department of Environment, Malaysia. He is also Adjunct Professor of the Central Institute of Fisheries Education, India. Mr. Nagaraj has expertise in industry engagement, public-private sector partnerships, and stakeholder forums.

Amanda Nickson

Director, Global Tuna Conservation Campaign, Pew Environment Group

Amanda Nickson is Director of the Global Tuna Conservation Campaign of the Pew Environment Group. The tuna campaign helps secure effective management of both Atlantic and Pacific bluefin tunas, and works in the Pacific toward development of effective catch limits and gear regulations for bigeye and skipjack tunas. Previously at Pew, she led advocacy efforts with regional fisheries management organizations to address conservation of sharks, tuna and other valuable marine species.  Before joining Pew, Ms. Nickson worked for WWF directing international efforts to protect threatened charismatic species and leading WWF’s Bycatch Initiative to reduce the incidental catch of non-target species.

Kenya Nozaki

Kenya Nozaki is sociologist and associate professor at Ehime University in Japan. He was the visiting scholar at Cornell University in 2005. His main areas of research interest are food culture and food systems. In 2010, Mr. Nozaki organized “Sustainable Seafood Japan”, the consortium of academia, retailers, distributors, chefs, WWF, MSC, journalists and fishery industry professionals who aim to promote sustainable seafood in Japan.

Ricardo Oliveros-Ramos is a researcher in the Instituto del Mar del Perú (Peruvian Marine Research Institute) where he works in ecosystem modeling, with a focus on the dynamics of the Humboldt Current Ecosystem. Mr. Oliveros-Ramos is PhD candidate in Ecology and Evolution at the University of Montpellier 2 in France, with a Master’s degree in Mathematics from Pontificia Universidad Católica in Perú and a Bachelor’s degree in Biology from Universidad Nacional Agraria La Molina in Perú.

Sarah Ong

With over 10 years working experience in international media and the private sector, Ms. Ong draws on her expertise to educate and engage stakeholders along the supply chain – consumers, businesses, and the authorities – in promoting sustainable seafood in Singapore. Ms. Ong was instrumental in bringing about the partnership with Cold Storage, Singapore’s leading supermarket chain, to ban shark fin and introduce sustainable seafood in 48 stores.

Antonio Orsini

Antonio Orsini’s career is dedicated to the development and management of efficient and sustainable tuna supply chains. Mr. Orsini has experience in tuna trading for sashimi markets, tuna farming development projects in Tunisia, Turkey, and Libya and processing super-frozen tuna. He has been actively supporting the development of artisanal and large scale fishing communities around the world. Mr. Orsini joined Tri Marine in 2012 to manage the company’s global fresh and frozen tuna business for non-canning markets. Previously, Mr. Orsini managed the sustainable tuna supply chain of New England Seafood with the responsibility of meeting the challenging quality and CSR expectations of leading UK retailers.

In addition, Dr. Padiyar has undertaken short-term consultancy works in China, Myanmar, Vietnam, Palestine, the Solomon Islands, and Fiji.
Dr. Padiyar has graduate and post-graduate degrees in Fisheries and Aquaculture Science from College of Fisheries, Mangalore, India and has a PhD in Aquaculture from Deakin University, Australia.

Clotilde Pallier

Assuming the function of Sustainable Development Manager, she now undertakes various projects related to environmental and social matters. Mathew Parr

Mathew Parr is a Senior Advisor in Economics and Ecosystems at IUCN NL. He acts as Coordinator for the Economics and Ecosystems Group, and Program Manager for the Responsible Shrimp Improvements Program. Mr. Parr has initiated, developed and managed many projects within the ‘business, economics and ecosystem nexus’ including: analyzing value chains, advising leading standards and certification processes, organizing multi-stakeholder sustainability platforms, providing direct advice and training to large corporations on biodiversity and ecosystem management, and building ecosystem based business cases. Mr. Parrhas a Bachelor’s in Economics and Philosophy, and a Master’s in Biodiversity Conservation and Management from Imperial College London.

Hannah Parris

Dr. Hannah Parris is an institutional and policy economist specialising in the application of economics to ecological sustainability and natural resource management. She completed her doctoral studies on the allocation and institutional design of fisheries management in the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission. Dr. Parris has completed several consultancies on allocation, business development, and fisheries management in the Pacific region, including tuna supply chains and the use of fair trade principles in fisheries management. Dr. Parris’s most recent work focuses on the use of business and commodity supply chains in generating authentic, sustainable, and equitably produced consumer goods.

François Pasteau

François Pasteau is the owner and chef of the Parisian restaurant L’Epi Dupin, founded in 1995. Mr. Pasteau is a graduate of FERRANDI, the school of French culinary arts. He previously worked with well-known chefs such as Joël Robuchon, Henri Faugeron, and Michel Kéréver. François is one of the first French chefs to be conscious of marine resource conservation, believing that chefs act as ambassadors of sustainability. Publicly, François raises awareness of seafood sustainability issues and asks for more sourcing information from retailers. François is also President of the FERRANDI alumni association, enabling him to communicate seafood sustainability to future generations of young chefs.

Corey Peet is the North American Director for Blueyou, a Swiss-based consulting company specializing in the development and management of responsible seafood supply chains. Mr. Peet previously worked for SeaChoice Canada and the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch program, where he managed the development of aquaculture sustainability assessments. He also served as co-coordinator for WWF’s Shrimp Aquaculture Dialogue and other roles for the bivalve, tilapia, salmon, and Pangasius roundtables.
Mr. Peet earned a Master’s degree in Marine Conservation Ecology from the University of Victoria, where he studied the impacts of sea lice transfer from salmon farms on the health of juvenile salmon.

Leading a coalition of industry partners, Mrs. Pena is working with boat owners and processors to change their way of doing business so everyone can benefit from the lobster resource in a sustainable way. She has a Business Administration degree.

Dr. Phillips received a PhD in Aquaculture and Fish Behaviour from the University of Stirling.

Nora Pouillon

In 1979, Nora Pouillon opened Restaurant Nora, which became the first certified organic restaurant in the United States. She is the author of “Cooking with Nora,” which was a finalist for the Julia Child Cookbook Award. Ms. Pouillon worked with SeaWeb and the Natural Resources Defense Council to launch the Give Swordfish A Break media campaign to mobilize chefs and consumers in support of fisheries conservation. Pouillon has received awards from the International Association of Culinary Professionals, Women Chefs & Restaurateurs, Santé, the Organic Trade Association, New Hope Natural Media, the American Horticultural Society, and the Campaign for Better Health. Pouillon also co-founded Changing Seas, a sustainable aquaculture business.

Mark Powell

Dr. Mark Powell is Global Seafood Leader for WWF International. In this role, he works with seafood businesses, producers, fishery & resource managers, and WWF staff around the world on advancing sustainable fisheries and aquaculture, supporting the development of markets for sustainable seafood, and uniting seafood markets with WWF’s ocean conservation programs. Prior to joining WWF, Dr. Powell developed and led fish conservation and sustainable seafood programs for Ocean Conservancy, including working with governments, NGOs, businesses, and individuals.
Dr. Powell earned his PhD from the University of California San Diego, while working at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography.

Suraphol Pratuangtun

Suraphol Pratuangtun qualified as a dentist from Mahidol University in Thailand but in 1987 he became an early adopter of shrimp farming in his home province of Surat Thani. He co-founded the Surat Thani Shrimp Farmers Club in 1990, acting as President from 1995-1997. He is a well-known personality in the shrimp business in Thailand and has been instrumental, along with other members of the shrimp club, in developing, field testing, and spreading awareness of better management practices. Mr. Pratuangtun has been President of the Thai Marine Shrimp Farmers Association since 1999.

Marc Prein

Dr. Marc Prein is an advisor for the “Promotion of Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture” Programme at Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit where he works on the certification of aquaculture farms according to sustainability standards.
Previously, Dr. Prein led a research project for ICLARM in Ghana on appropriate aquaculture systems and was also Senior Scientist and Programme Leader for IAA systems based in Manila and Penang, Malaysia. He also worked as a consultant for GTZ and FAO on aquaculture development issues.
Dr. Prein graduated with a MSc and PhD in Fisheries Biology, Marine Zoology and Marine Chemistry at Kiel University, Germany.

Irendra Radjawali

Irendra Radjawali’s research focuses on the political ecology of reef fisheries which consist of LRFF fishing and trade, ornamental fish catch, and coral harvesting for aquariums. His PhD research is part of SPICE (Science for the Protection of Indonesian Marine and Coastal Ecosystem), a German-Indonesia research initiative affiliated with ZMT (Leibniz Center for Tropical Marine Ecology – Bremen). Currently, Mr. Radjawli is affiliated with Institute of Oriental and Asian Studies, Bonn University, Germany and is a PhD candidate with the Faculty of Social Sciences, Bremen University, Germany.

Robert Rangeley

Dr. Robert Rangeley first joined WWF Canada as the Director of WWF’s Northwest Atlantic Ecoregion program. WWF’s marine team work includes mapping and protecting marine habitats, moving shipping lanes away from endangered whale feeding grounds, protecting seabirds from illegal bilge oil dumping, and working to reduce excessive bycatch in Canadian and high seas fisheries.
Dr. Rangeley holds a MSc and PhD in Biology, with post-doctoral research conducted at the Huntsman Marine Science Centre in St. Andrews and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.

Peter Redmayne

Sea Fare Group has consulted for private businesses, commodity marketing groups, and a variety of NGOs on sustainable seafood projects. Mr. Redmayne served as the founding editor and publisher of Seafood Leader magazine and founded the consumer magazine Simply Seafood. He has also fished commercially in Alaska.
Mr. Redmayne graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, has a Masters of Marine Affairs degree from the University of Rhode Island, and has served as an US Navy officer.

Prior to that Dr. Restrepo held a faculty position at the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science in Miami. Dr. Restrepo has considerable expertise in fishery stock assessments and the provision of scientific advice to decision makers, especially for highly-migratory species.

Carmen Revenga

Wayne Rogers

Wayne Rogers is currently the Corporate Services Director of the WorldFish Center. He started his career working for IBM and held senior financial positions for IBM in Europe. He founded and launched a successful renewable company in Australia and served as CFO of energy start up Novera Energy. Dr. Sadovy is co-founder and Director of a global initiative to protect fish spawning aggregations, which are highly susceptible to commercial fishing. She is also active in the IUCN and was the founder of the Groupers and Wrasses Specialist Group. Dr. Sadovy has published widely and been featured in many media outlets.

Jon Safey

Timothy Sau-kin Ng

Timothy Sau-kin Ng helped Ocean Park formulate their first education team and launch education programs targeting school students. In his 23 years at Ocean Park, he has served as the Curator of Exhibits and Giant Pandas and as Zoological Operations & Education Director. Since 2003, Mr. Ng has been responsible for the daily operation of Ocean Park’s conservation arm, Ocean Park Conservation Foundation Hong Kong (OPCFHK). OPCFHK has allocated over $26 million to fund over 200 research projects on threatened species across Asia.
OPCFHK joined hands with Ocean Park to engage over 26,000 visitors to pledge not to consume shark fins, humphead wrasse and bluefin tuna.

Shah Selbe

As a liquid propulsion engineer for unmanned space vehicles at Boeing Space & Intelligence Systems, Shah Selbe brings a unique perspective to the sustainable seafood movement. Mr. Selbe develops low cost tracking, monitoring, and enforcement tools to detect and deter illegal, unregulated and unreported (IUU) fishing. He has worked with leaders at the United States Department of State, Monterey Bay Aquarium, Pew Environmental Group, Environmental Defense Fund, the Center for Ocean Solutions, and the government of Palau. Mr. Selbe was a finalist at Savannah Ocean Exchange and the Katerva Challenge and a semifinalist in the Buckminster Fuller Challenge for his work with IUU technology.

Stan Shea

Recently, Mr. Shea coordinated a survey for BLOOM on ‘shark consumption habits & attitudes in Hong Kong’ and gave shark seminars to more than 2000 people.
Mr. Shea has a BSc in Environmental Sciences from Oxford Brookes University and an Master’s degree in Ecology and Biodiversity from The University of Hong Kong.

Katherine Short

At WWF International, she led and supported sustainable fisheries and seafood work, moving into a management role in 2008 to support the revision of WWF’s global marine network initiatives. Ms. Short is currently at WWF New Zealand working on offshore fisheries. She has worked with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization developing international trade meetings on seafood in Europe, Japan, Russia and Indonesia. In addition, Ms. Siggs also served as head of Communications for the Finnish forest products group UPM-Kymmene Group and acted as head of Corporate Affairs for the Australian company Global Renewables. Melanie holds a master’s degree in Responsibility and Business Practice from the University of Bath in England.

Neil Anthony Sims

Neil Anthony Sims is co-Founder and CEO of Kampachi Farms, LLC in Kona, Hawaii and La Paz, Mexico. Over the past two decades, he has led teams that have accomplished a number of breakthrough developments in pearl oyster culture, offshore aquaculture legislation and regulation, marine fish hatchery technology, open ocean mariculture systems, and most recently, untethered open ocean ‘drifter pens’ known as the Velella project. Mr. Sims is the founding President of the Ocean Stewards Institute – the open ocean mariculture trade association – and sits on the Steering Committee for the Seriola-Cobia Aquaculture Dialogue for the WWF-sponsored Aquaculture Stewardship Council.

Russell F. Smith, III is the Deputy Assistant Secretary for International Fisheries at NOAA. He serves as the US Government Commissioner for the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas and provides leadership for all tuna regional fishery management organizations. Previously, Mr. Smith served at the Office of the US Trade Representative as Director for International Environmental Policy and Multilateral Environmental Agreements. He was also an attorney in the Environment and Natural Resources Division of the US Department of Justice.
Mr. Smith is a graduate of Yale University and the University of Michigan Law School.

Michele Stark

Ms. Michèle Stark is the head of the aquaculture & fisheries department at IMO, the Institute for Marketecology in Switzerland. She is the lead auditor in both fisheries and aquaculture for all major seafood standards. In addition, she has been involved in the development of a number of major seafood standards and has a large network with connections to all major standard owners, accreditation bodies, and other relevant stakeholders. Ms. Stark is a marine biologist specializing in coastal sciences and management. After working in biochemical analysis, wetland ecology, and risk assessment for some years, she joined IMO in 2006.

Richard Stevens

Richard Stevens is Research Development and Extension Manager with the Western Australian Fishing Industry Council, which provides advice to industry on State and Federal developments, new fisheries and products, extension of research to industry, and export market development. He has developed and sold three successful seafood businesses of his own. Mr. Stevens has held Board positions with the Australian Fisheries R&D Corporation and has been influential in the development of seafood standards both for Government (Food Standards Australia New Zealand) and industry (Australian Seafood Standard, Australian Fish Names Standard.)
Mr. Stevens holds an Honors degree in Applied Ecology and professional and recreational fishing certificates.

Rohana Subasinghe

Senior Aquaculturist, Fisheries and Aquaculture Department, FAO
PANEL: Untapped Potential for Sustainability: Exploring Aquaculture Innovation in Asia

Rohana Subasinghe is a Senior Aquaculturist in the Fisheries and Aquaculture Department of FAO, responsible for analyses of trends in aquaculture development and forecasting the future of aquaculture globally. He has been instrumental in developing the FAO Aquaculture Certification Guidelines and is currently working on an assessment framework for conformity with public and private certification schemes. He is a founding member of the Fish Health Section of the Asian Fisheries Society and is Technical Secretary to the Sub-Committee on Aquaculture for the FAO.
Mr. Subasinghe earned his BSc in Zoology from University of Colombo, MSc in Aquaculture from University of Plymouth and PhD in Aquatic Animal Health from University of Stirling.

His research focuses on the certification of LRFF fishing and trade, particularly examining LRFF fishing and trade in Indonesia.

John Susman

In 2000 John Susman founded Fisheads Seafood Strategy to develop and manage premium seafood brands. Mr. Susman was mentored by chef Neil Perry, and has worked with fishmonger J. LeLande at the Rungis Markets in Paris. He founded the fishongering business The Flying Squid Brothers to serve chefs in Australia. He has also managed the Sea Fare Australia marketing campaign in Japan. Mr. Susman is head judge of the Royal Agriculture Society Aquaculture competition and is a restaurant judge in the National Restaurant and Catering Awards.
Mr. Susman has a BA in Commerce from Adelaide University, and a postgraduate degree in Hospitality Management from Regency Park College in Adelaide.

Gil Sylvia

Dr. Gil Sylvia is a marine resource economist, Director of the Coastal Oregon Marine Experiment Station, and Professor in the Department of Agriculture and Resource Economics, Oregon State University. His research focuses on fishery and aquaculture management and policy, seafood marketing, and bioeconomic modeling. He recently served on a committee of the National Research Council for improving collaborative fishery research, and presently serves on a committee developing Sea Grant’s national fishery and seafood strategic implementation plan. As Superintendent of COMES, the largest applied marine research group in Oregon, Dr. Sylvia collaborates with the fishing and seafood industries, coastal communities, and management agencies.

Yoko Tamura

Yoko Tamura is an independent consultant who worked recently with Sustainable Fisheries Partnership to promote Fishery Improvement Projects and buyer engagement in Japan. With a MA in Marine Affairs from the University of Washington and a BSc in Marine Resource Management from the Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology, she has worked on coastal resource management, fisheries, and sustainable development. Previously, Ms. Tamura was a technical expert for Japan International Cooperation Agency and a project coordinator at Conservation International Japan. Ms. Tamura also contributed to a production of a seafood pocket guide in Japan to raise awareness of seafood sustainability issues.

Matt Thompson

Matt Thompson is a senior aquaculture specialist with the New England Aquarium, responsible for researching and developing aquaculture reports for corporate partners including Ahold USA, Darden Restaurants, Gorton’s, and Sea Port Products. He also leads the Aquarium’s participation in shrimp farming improvements to change practices at the farm level. Mr. Thompson represented the Aquarium on the Farmed Salmon Technical Committee for the Global Aquaculture Alliance and coordinates the Aquarium’s involvement with the World Wildlife Fund-facilitated Aquaculture Dialogues. Previously, he worked at Marine Biotech as a systems technician.
Mr. Thompson earned a Bachelor’s degree in Marine Science from Southampton University and a Master’s degree from Stirling University.

In 2009, Allen To joined WWF Hong Kong to start his career in sustainable seafood, developing partnerships with the hospitality and catering industries to facilitate sustainable seafood sourcing, and working with the trading community locally and regionally to improve the sustainability of seafood trade in the Coral Triangle. He has been interviewed in several media outlets and has spoken at seminars for corporations, conservation groups, seafood trade expos, and universities in Hong Kong and overseas. His articles can be found in scientific journals, bulletins, and trade magazines.
Allen has a PhD in Marine Science from Hong Kong University.

Paul and his team are responsible for implementing the Loblaw Sustainable Seafood Commitment.

John Volpe

Dr. John Volpe leads the Seafood Ecology Research Group at University of Victoria. He uses data intensive approaches to uncover linkages between ecological and social sustainability, focusing on marine-based food production systems. Current research topics include the Global Aquaculture Performance Index initiative; salmon, sablefish and bivalve aquaculture; aquaculture-capture fisheries interactions; invasive species and marine applications of complexity theory.
Dr. Volpe holds a BSc (honors) and MSc in Molecular Ecology from the University of Guelph, Canada and a PhD in Population and Invasion Ecology from the University of Victoria. Dr. Volpe held a previous faculty appointment at the University of Alberta.

Scott Wallace

Scott Wallace is a Sustainable Fisheries Analyst at the David Suzuki Foundation. His work is centered on improving the management of capture fisheries and aquaculture operations in Canada. Mr. Wallace is also responsible for overseeing SeaChoice assessments of Canada’s fisheries and aquaculture. He has worked directly with the fishing industry to improve fishing practices. Mr. Wallace is a member of the Marine Fishes Subcommittee of the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada. Mr. Wallace is also an adjunct professor at the University of British Columbia’s Fisheries Centre where he completed his doctoral research.

Brad Warren

Brad Warren is founder and director of the Global Ocean Health Program, the ocean acidification initiative of the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership and the National Fisheries Conservation Center. This program works to protect fisheries and ecosystems from acidification by documenting impacts, cultivating effective witnesses and leaders on the waterfront, and building capacity and public engagement to prevent and manage acidification. Mr. Warren led Washington State’s Blue Ribbon Panel on Ocean Acidification. He has served as editor of Pacific Fishing and correspondent and editor for National Fisherman. Mr. Warren founded the National Fisheries Conservation Center and has advised NMFS, FAO, industry, and conservation groups.

Tom Willems is project leader of the Shrimp Aquaculture Project within Oxfam Novib. In collaboration with IUCN and his colleague Leo van Mulekom, he initiated the RSCIP project on responsible shrimp farming in the countries of Indonesia, Bangladesh, and Vietnam. Prior to his work on Aquaculture, Mr. Willems worked as a project leader for projects related to Access to Justice, Agriculture, and Gender Justice. Mr. Willems studied Business Administration at the Radboud University in The Netherlands. He also holds a Master’s degree in International Development.

He has been involved in mussel culture in Wales and Northern Ireland for the past decade. Previously, Mr. Wilson worked with the National Federation of Fishermen’s Organisation, the Irish agency responsible fishing and aquaculture called Bord Iascaigh Mhara, the Centre for the Economics and Management of Aquatic Resources, and alongside First Nations on the Canadian Pacific Coast. Mr. Wilson was a Welsh Government appointee on the North Western and North Wales Sea Fisheries Committee.

Herman Wisse

Herman Wisse works as a consultant for the Global Sustainable Seafood Initiative (GSSI). His responsibilities include developing a detailed project proposal for the foundation of the GSSI, and facilitating liaisons with parties interested in becoming involved with the GSSI. Mr. Wisse graduated from Wageningen University in the Netherlands with a MSc degree in Aquaculture and Marine Resource Management. For his dissertation Mr. Wisse benchmarked the governance of seafood certification programs against the requirements of the FAO Guidelines, while working as a consultant for Royal Ahold Sustainable Seafood Program.

Jonathan Wong

Professor, Baptist University, Hong Kong

Mr. Wong is a professor at the Department of Biology at Baptist University in Hong Kong with a focus in composting biodegradable waste material. As the director of the Hong Kong Organic Resource Centre Certification Ltd he is engaged in organic agriculture, organic food production, and green consumerism in Hong Kong. On behalf of the Hong Kong City Government (Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department) he developed a standard for organic aquaculture production in Hong Kong and then supported the set up of pilot organic fish farms, leading to the first organic fish products available with certified organic quality.

Olivia Wu

Olivia (Liv) Wu is one of five executive chefs at Google, Inc in Mountain View, California. As part of the culinary leadership, she manages the food and beverage program at corporate headquarters, which oversees 35 dining rooms, 170 snack outlets and the purchasing direction of the team. Ms. Wu has made it her personal goal to provide healthful, nutrient dense, sustainable food choices, especially with regard and to local, seasonal, and sustainable seafood and produce. Previously, she was a journalist with 20 years’ reporting on food, nutrition, policy, farming, and sustainability. In 2002, she developed and wrote the column “Seafood in Season” for the San Fransisco Chronicle. She has written “The Grand Wok Cookbook” and “Turning 50: 50 Personal Celebrations”. Ms. Wu is published in Bon Appetit , Vegetarian Times and Hemisphere magazines, and has received several journalism awards.

Margaret Xu Yuan

Margaret Xu Yuan opened private dining restaurant Yin Yang in Hong Kong in 2008. As Chef and founder Ms. Xu Yuan creates all dishes on the menu. An ex-designer, Ms. Xu Yuan began cooking for one table as a hobby in her remote village den, a place she called Cuisine X. There she learned precious old methods, such as stone grinding, from village inhabitants. Yin Yang grows produce on their own organic farm to bring food lovers the freshest on the plate. The restaurant even creates its own fruit wines such as Kumquat-cello to provide true farm-to-table Chinese cuisine presented in cosmopolitan Hong Kong style.

Aiko Yamauchi

Mr. Yamauchi is the Fishery and Seafood Project Leader of WWF Japan. He graduated from the Tokyo University of Fisheries, Department of Resource Management and received his PhD in marine science from the Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology. He began work as Marine Program Fishery Officer at WWF Japan in 2008. Mr. Yamauchi’s work involves advocacy and campaign activities for sustainable fisheries and seafood.

Maggie Xu

Maggie Xu joined the International Fishmeal & Fishoil Organization in October 2011 as the China Manager. She was previously a Trade Commissioner responsible for fish, seafood, meat, and processed food and beverage products at the Embassy of Canada to the P. R. China for ten years. Ms. Xu has a BA in English language and completed a summer school  given by London School of Economics and Peking University on international finance.

Helene York

Helene York was named a 2010 Seafood Champion by Seafood Choices Alliance for her steadfast commitment to sustainable seafood, including minimizing wasted resources and reducing carbon-intensive air-freighting of seafood. In 2007, Ms. York created and launched Bon Appétit’s Low Carbon Diet program to raise awareness of the connection between the food system and climate change, and to reduce emissions associated with Bon Appétit’s food service operations by 25% over five years. Her most recent effort toward this goal was developing and launching Bon Appétit’s Fish to Fork purchasing program in 2011, which promotes the use of fresh, seasonal seafood from non-industrial regional sources.

Candhika Yusuf

WORKSHOP: Farmers in Transition Towards Sustainability: How Can We Speed Up the Process?

Candhika Yusuf began his professional career as a freelancer underwater photographer and coral reef ecosystem surveyor. He worked as Junior Scientist for the Institute for Marine Research and Observation in Bali. After joining WWF as a Fisheries Officer, Mr. Yusuf now acts as Aquaculture Coordinator for WWF Indonesia, where he coordinates 5 aquaculture work sites. The program works to implement better aquaculture practices for small-scale farmers and industrial businesses based on ASC standards, and to assist and support the government in generating policies for sustainable aquaculture practices in Indonesia.
Mr. Yusuf has a BS in Marine Science from Diponegoro University.
